Following a gas-break , the section three check-in displayed a bit of the family atmosphere that the off-road community holds dear as VFTR founding member Richard Colahan , his wife , and grandson were all working together to send the riders off into the longest section of the day .
At over eight miles , the third section was where things began to get tougher , especially once the riders hit the first of only a few true “ rock-gardens ” a few miles into the segment followed by the worst of the mud in the event . Once you survived these eight miles , and the subsequent five-plus mile fourth section of prime single-track , a run down a forest road provided a view of a pipeline clearing heading straight up the mountain ahead .
The expectation as you approached was that you would be sent directly up this quite vertical appearing feature before relief consumes you as you see the arrow pointing left at the base of the hill . Not long after , you are shuttled into section five and ¾ mile of freshly-cut trail
