The winter season started a bit late this year ; rain and soft ground caused SDR to cancel the opening round originally scheduled for January 9th . But on January 23rd , 66 eager riders in 11 different classes lined up , equipped with Trelleborg-style tires or ice screws , to challenge each other and the elements for a chance at the top step , and some bragging rights . The outpouring of competitor entries and spectators for a local race during the coldest time of the year was truly impressive . Riders equipped with foam handguards
but far less gear than you ’ d imagine for the 24-degree temperature . Fans lining the first turn would rush through the woods to cheer on their favorite rider , following them through as many parts of the course as possible , no matter how deep the snow .
