How to stay stylish when your body is having a heatwave BY SAM & JORDI WOODS I f you are of a certain age I am sure you have experienced your body’s own heater system turning up the thermostat even when it is only 17 degrees outside. This rise in internal heat is not welcomed for most, as it can feel (and look) like you are having your own little heatwave. Everything you put on can feel hot and clingy without warning and then leave you feeling clammy and not very stylish, to say the least. Combine that erratic and unannounced heatwave with having to decide what to wear each day, it is no surprise so many women can feel overwhelmed when it comes to getting dressed. With our style knowledge and experience in shopping for many female clients with this dressing dilemma and yes, Sam dealing with her own heatwave first hand at this stage of her life – we certainly have lots of tips to share! 7 Practical tips for when your body is having a heatwave Opt for light layers. Layering is not only a great styling technique for creating different illusions to a body shape, it is also helpful for when your body temperature starts to rise as you can remove items as required. Some great layering options are a camisole or tank worn under a blouse or button down shirt, a scarf draped over a lower cut top, a wrap draped around the shoulders of a sleeveless or shorter sleeved top. When layering always consider how your outfit looks with and without the items so you can confidently add or remove them when needed. Choose breathable fabrics. Opt for natural fibres like; linen, silk, cotton and light weight wool in the cooler months. These fabrics will “breathe” as your body heats up thus allowing air in so your body can cool itself back down. 1 2 8 ON T H E C OA S T – OV ER 5 5 dusting of a fine neutral coloured powder will not only hold your foundation in place longer, it can also be reapplied throughout the day after a mini temperature increase to absorb excess moisture. Choose complimentary colours to keep cool. If you have read any of our fashion and style blogs before you will know we are firm advocates of colour and how wearing the correct shades and hues for your complexion is an integral component of personal style. As colour can create energy it can also help us to feel cooler or warmer. If you are prone to heating up opt for the more calming hues in your colour palette and avoid colours that bring out the pink or redness in your complexion. Stay modern. At this time in a woman’s life it can be a constant reminder that “those years” have arrived. Sam says “fight back and be fashionable at any age!”. Now more than ever is the time to embrace the styles and fashion that you love to wear. There are two forms of hydration that you need to replenish when you have a little heatwave… Internal and external. Get into the habit of always having a re-usable water bottle with you to rehydrate your internal body and carry a face mist with you to hydrate and cool your external body either during or post a “hot flush”. Carry a reusable cotton face sponge. They are fabulous to remove makeup but can also double as a face sponge to dab on your face when it “glistens”! Prime & Powder. To minimise makeup from sliding down your face when your internal heatwave is happening we have two words for you…Prime & Powder!
