“If you are over 50 you should wear pastels”
…nope, not necessarily!
T
his is a common belief that has
been around for decades and
is actually a total MYTH! Just
because you are of a certain age does not
mean you need to lighten the colours
you wear or dress in particular hues. As
colour analysts and personal stylists we
combine science and style to determine
how a person should or shouldn’t
embrace certain colours. Therefore, there
is no one rule about pastel colours that is
accurate for any one age demographic but
rather “colour rules” about “how to” wear
pastel colours for any age.
This Spring/Summer pastels are
making a comeback and if you want to
look modern and up to date you need to
learn how to wear them to suit you! No
matter what age demographic you find
yourself in.
Let’s firstly look at what makes a colour
be referred to as pastel and the different
ways to wear these hues to suit you!
What are Pastel Colours?
Pastels can evolve from any intense
colour. They can be in several shades
lighter and fairer than the initial colour
pigmentation creating a softer and paler
intensity. Below are six key pastel shades

Choose the right shade of pastel for
you! Do you need; warm or cool, icy,
dusty, muted or clear pastels? Wearing
a pastel that does’t suit your complexion
can age you and leave you feeling
drained.

Embrace your natural style. If you
like quirky styling then try mixing
your pastels with a pop of intense colour
e.g Lilac and Red. If you are more of a
classical style why not try teaming pastels
back with denim or dramatic black.

Have no “bad distractions”. When
wearing lighter colours sometimes
it can reveal unwanted “lumps &
bumps” – not flattering at any age. To
avoid this opt for pants with a slightly
thicker fabric or if wearing a pastel knit
try wearing a camisole underneath to
ensure a smooth finish.
Remember: You need to love the
colour and the colour MUST love you.
Do not just wear pastels (or any colour
for that matter) just because they are in
fashion and all you can find!
