The Big C
f inding a happy face and
a happy heart
“It’s the biggest shock of your life when
someone tells you you have cancer.
Hearing the C word leaves you in a state
of complete shock.”
A loving wife, mother and grandmother,
70-year-old Long Jetty resident, Beverley
McLean has always lived a fit and healthy
life. From starting martial art schools in
Jakarta and holding demonstrations in Hong
Kong, Canada, Australia and New Zealand,
to volunteering at the local gardening club
to regular rounds of golf, she has lived an
active life, finding joy in giving and getting
out there. But in July 2018, Beverley’s
life was turned upside down after being
diagnosed with breast cancer.
“My daughter was with me when I
received the news and she kept asking the
doctor whether I would still be able to play
golf! It’s true, I’m not sure what I would do if I
was told I would never be able to play again.”
After her surgery, Beverly required
radiation therapy and was referred to
Radiation Oncology Centres (ROC) in
Gosford. Having little understanding of
what radiation therapy involved, Beverley
was walking into an unknown but was
soon comforted by a professional and
caring team.
“I had a friend who told me to go to
ROC, she said everything was personalised
and centred around you. From my very first
appointment arrangements were made
to suit me, and everyone made you feel
welcome.”
Beverley received 16 high intensity
radiation therapy treatments across four
weeks and was able to continue living as
normal a life as possible.
“It [radiation treatment] was nothing
compared to what I thought it was going to
be like. You lie on a bed for a while and get to
listen to relaxing music, there’s a few sounds
and then soon enough you are all finished for
the day. At the beginning it felt daunting but
all the staff just made you feel at home. I felt
confident every time I went in, plus I always
had the time to go and play golf after.”
