Sydney Male Choir Benefit Concert for Camp Breakaway The renowned Sydney Male Choir is returning to its home away from home, the Central Coast, for a concert at the Mingara Recreation Club on Sunday 1st July. The Choir with “Bringing Joy Through Song” as their the major objective, had its beginnings in 1913 as the “The Petersham Glee Club”, later changing to the Sydney Mail Choir in 1919. Over that time it has sung all types of music, from operatic choruses to Welsh hymns, comic songs and vaudeville to show stoppers and pop, as well as modern compositions and commissioned pieces. It may well be this variety in its repertoire that appeals so much to audiences and choristers alike. The choir regularly performs across the greater Sydney metropolitan area and the Central Coast, as well as undertaking concert tours to regional areas of NSW, other Australian states and overseas. In May of this year the Choir is touring the Southern parts of NSW, which will include a benefits concert at Bega, to raise funds for the Township of Tathra devastated by the recent bushfires. In its centenary year 2013, the choir was honoured with invitations to sing at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Villers- Bretonneux. In Sydney, the choir has a proud tradition of leading the singing at every ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Martin Place since its inception in 1930. With the wonderful support of Westfield – Tuggerah and Mingara Recreation Club this performance will be a benefit concert to raise much needed funds for Camp Breakaway. Established in 1982, Camp Breakaway is one of Australia’s most highly regarded not for profit organisations. Breakaway is set on 25 acres of natural bushland at San Remo where a small group of dedicated staff, assisted by hundreds of volunteers, give people with a disability a ‘respite holiday’ – a break away from the everyday to make new friends and enjoy new experiences. Parents or guardians also enjoy the break away from the stress of constant care and connect with others who understand the challenges they face. As a registered charity, Camp Breakaway is reliant on the generosity of sponsors and the public to help fund its noble cause. Events such as the Sydney Male Choir concert are of vital importance to helping young persons with a disability and their carers get a well-deserved break and have fun.
