and/or have their own family? As parents we all want our children to be happy and have a satisfying life. Autism often exists as a neurodevelopmental condition on its own, however in fifty- percent of cases, it exists co-morbidly with other medical or psychiatric conditions. Some of the conditions that can occur with ASD cause more difficulty than others. Most can be treated however. Anxiety, Sensory Processing issues and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are the three most common co-morbidities, however many children on the autism spectrum also suffer with gastrointestinal issues, sleep issues, oppositional defiant disorder or learning issues. What does the future hold for your child? Early intervention is the key: the earlier, the better. Speech therapy is not just about understanding and speaking language. Having ASD means the child needs assistance with understanding “social” language, known as social pragmatics, or “pragmatic language”. Intervention here provides children on the spectrum with strategies on how to communicate in both verbal and non-verbal ways, assisting them to understand and maintain relationships which will help them function in their day to day life. It supports how your child speaks and improves their understanding of why we use language and that how we communicate is equally as important as what we communicate. Occupational therapy supports the development of fine and gross motor skills; The Understanding Autism – Newly Diagnosed Workshop Covering the following topics: ƒ ƒ What is autism and what is your child’s individual ASD profile? ƒ ƒ What interventions will benefit my child? ƒ ƒ Parenting the ASD child: speaking the language of ASD and understanding my child ƒ ƒ Schools: Mainstream or not? ƒ ƒ Issues that arise during the early school years ƒ ƒ Working with the NDIS. the ability to share; the ability to self- regulate their body and emotions, cope with a change in routine and move beyond their fixed special interests. Children with autism feel the same emotions as everybody else, however find it difficult to put a name to and/or recognise it in themselves and others. Psychology supports the understanding and labelling of these emotions, which is an important foundation to preventing depression and anxiety throughout the teenage years and adulthood. Psychology also assists parents in managing their child’s behaviour and the family as a whole. Social skills groups are vital in helping children learn how mix with their peers; how to make and keep friends; and how to behave and fit into varying social situations.
