Have you finished your family? The Corner Family Surgery Have you considered a vasectomy? 25,000 men in Australia have a vasectomy each year D id you know that vasectomies are incredibly effective and have a very low failure rate? A vasectomy is more effective than condoms or birth control pills. No more wondering whether she took her pill or if the condom broke. No more late-night runs for pregnancy tests because she feels a little off. This is the safest way to put concerns about an “oops” baby to rest. Dr Jeremy Bramston principal doctor of The Corner Family Surgery has been performing vasectomies on the coast for 17 years. At an initial pre-vasectomy consultation the whole process is explained and an examination is conducted. Patients who have had a vasectomy have reported that the whole process was very easy. The procedure is performed in the surgery under local anaesthetic and the process takes approximately one and a half hours. This allows time for preparation, the procedure itself as well as post-operative observations. The actual operation takes about 30 minutes. The procedure, is performed by cutting the vas deferens, the tube that carries sperm from the testicles to the penis. This prevents the man’s sperm from mixing with seminal fluid and exiting the penis during ejaculation. After a vasectomy, sperm is still produced, but it dies and is naturally re-absorbed by the body. There is no change in hormones or sexual functioning and the penis is not part of the procedure. It is recommended that the patient relaxes for the rest of the day after the procedure. It’s the ultimate excuse to sit, do nothing on the lounge bingeing on Netflix or the sports channels. Recovery is fast. Patients who have a “sit down” job typically return to work in two days. More time off may be necessary if you have a more “physical” job. A medical certificate will be issued post-surgery. Contact sports should be avoided for 4 weeks. The risks are low. All surgeries carry risks, but vasectomies are usually uncomplicated. Being put under can be one of the most dangerous parts of having surgery. This procedure is performed with a local anaesthetic. The needle will be felt initially and then the rest will feel like an exam. Until a sperm count post-vasectomy has been completed to check that the surgery worked, contraception must continue to be used. Before the test, at least 36 ejaculations over a 3 month period, must be completed. This is to clear any sperm left in the tubes. Sometimes, it can take longer and more ejaculations are required before all the sperm is cleared from the system. A vasectomy procedure costs $850.00 and Medicare rebates are available. Men’s health is a specialty of the surgery. 30 Renwick Street, Wyoming Phone: 4328 2122 Vasectomies are a permanent and very effective way to stop unwanted pregnancies.
