it all went quiet!
for one saturday afternoon in May
1995 Arlesey became a ghost town
No-one was around. There were very few cars about, very
few people on the streets, no shoppers in the shops or even
drinkers in the pubs. It was the FA Vase Final at Wembley
and Arlesey Town had booked their place by beating Raunds
at home in a second-leg semi-final 5-0. But only after being
defeated in the first leg 3-0 at the away ground.
On 13th May coach loads of Arlesey residents, and non-residents,
descended on the stadium of English football for what was billed as the
highlight of towns club history. Television cameras were there. Youth teams
played warm up games. It seemed like the whole of Arlesey had turned up to
watch the team play, in the Carlsberg sponsored fixture.
After ninety minutes of nail-biting football Arlesey were victorious,
beating Oxford City 2-1 to take home the
gleaming trophy. Goals from Palma and
Gyalog clinched it, and Arlesey Town were
triumphant, taking home the silverware .
Arlesey Town’s Wembley side were: S.
Young, N. Cardines, G. Bambrick, P. Palma,
C. Hull, P. Gonsalves, S. Gyalog, G. Cox, N.
Kane, R. O’Keefe and G. Marshall. Subs: A.
Ward and T. Nicholls.
The pictures here are sent in by Arlesey folk
either part of the club or supporting the team
in their finest hour and a half. We have more
to show you next month. Thank you.
