from the past
For five years on the button has been reporting on events, pulling together pieces of history and publishing some old
pictures in and around Arlesey. This month we thought that some of the images we have in the library that we haven’t
shown you that might be worth airing. The images on these pages were scanned from photographs lent by Terry from
Terry’s Gentlemen’s Hairstylist before he left the shop in Hitchin Road.
by Steve Maddox
The first picture above is Poppet’s as it used to
be in the High Street (where Brown’s the Barbers
is today). Next door was Terry’s Gentlemen’s
Hairstylist. The buildings are destined to be
demolished to make access through to the
development to the west of the High Street.
Terry lent me a book of photographs with many
pictures from the last one hundred odd years. Some
you may recognise. Others yo may struggle with.
On the right is Rose Walk, part of the Arlesey Bury
Estate. This photograph dates from the early 20th
century when the house was still lived in and the
greenhouse at the end of the walk was in use. The
whole estate was built on in the 1970s and is now the
Chase Hill Road estate.
