The most inspirational event I feel is ‘Arlesey Remembers You!’
It not only brought people together it re-established a piece of
history and created a new one which I think is quite unique.
What inspired
you to start on
the button?
After the Parish Mag
discontinued I felt
there was a lack of
information getting to
people, information
which was important.
Stotfold News had
been going a few
years and was a good
source of news and
information and I
thought why not
try and replicate
that in a website form,
for Arlesey. So while
teaching myself the
software I got some
pages together and
started trying to get
people to look at them.
It was slow at first but

Cover of ‘on the button’ issu
gathered momentum.
Some people told me
they had no computer or access to one so it became clear there was a
need for a paper version. So I set out to
get advertisers, source a printer and produced an 8-page black and
white 1st issue in September 2012. It was well received and then
grew slowly over the next few years.
You’re a keen amateur dramatist – what has been
the most exciting achievement on the stage?
There have been a few I could mention. I’ve always loved panto so
loved being a on stage and making a fool of myself. The instant
feedback from an audience is such a buzz – especially the children.
I loved the Blues Brothers tribute we did in one of APPLE’s summer
shows.
The best show I’ve been in outside of APPLE was South Pacific with
Letchworth Arcadians. A great musical with fantastic songs for men.
Playing one of 3 dames in Sleeping Beauty with SPADS was also a
Do you need any help with on the button- is
there any opportunities for village volunteers to
become involved?
I always need help with content and advertising. My day job means I
am not around when most potential advertisers are at work, which is
one of the problems I had when producing the printed version.
If anyone has any ideas for content, events they need promoting or
has time to contact advertisers then that would be much appreciated.
I do take a lot of photos but I like to drop in images from others
where I can. It includes more people then and not just my view
on Arlesey.
How did you get involved in graphics and
publishing?

Coming from an artistic family, I was always surrounded by creative
people. My Dad was a watercolour artist, my sister painted and now
makes bespoke greeting cards and photo albums, my brother is a
technical illustrator and now designs exhibition stands. I decided I
wanted to go to College and take a course on Commercial Art (now
called Graphic Design). I really enjoyed the course, but struggled to get
a job afterwards, eventually I joined a Technical Publications agency
in Letchworth. The work was very busy and I soon got promoted and
moved around some other technical agencies. Along the way I trained
as a Technical Illustrator and then got involved in commercial projects
and learned computer graphics and illustration packages, which is
where it leads me today.
