Postcards from Arlesey
from a collection of old postcards and images loaned by Doreen Rix
P
ostcards used to be a very common way of communicating, and Arlesey had
its own series’ over many years. These were in the form of printed black
and white lithographs, actual photographic prints and four-colour printed cards.
The images here are scans of some of the cards collected by Doreen and
John Rix over many years. There are over 40 postcards in the collection with
many being stamped and post-dated giving a true age of the document.
On the right is a postcard showing the ‘Band of Hope procession’ in 1915,
during the first world war.
Below is a postcard showing Pryor’s Milliners on the corner of High Street and
Asylum Road (Hospital Road), outwardly the buildings have not changed much
since this picture was taken. Next to Pryor’s is A.D. Fletcher – Grocer and
Pork Butcher. Date unkown.
Captured above, The Crown public house, looking south along High Street
toward Hitchin Road, date unkown. There are now flats on the site of the old
Crown pub called Crown Lodge, and on the right of the picture is The Star – now
the Raj Villa indian restaurant and takeaway. Today the photographer would be
standing in the High Street outside Arlesey Pharmacy
Above is a card
of Three Counties
Asylum. The
reverse (left)
shows it was
sent to Mrs J.
Oliver in Ramsey,
Huntingdondshire
on 2nd September
1916. The stamp
is a halfpenny.
