news Arlesey Town Council would like to congratulate our Assistant Clerk, Mrs Lesley Rowe on her recent appointment as Town Clerk to Northill Parish Council. Lesley has worked for the Council for over ten years making an invaluable contribution – particularly during 2015 when she took on the role of acting Clerk for several months. We acknowledge her efforts, thank her for her commitment and dedication to the Council throughout the years and would like to wish her the best of success in her new position. In other news, the Council recently made representations at the Development Management Committee meeting of Central Bedfordshire Council relating to the planning application by Central Beds Assets team for a section of ‘Relief Road’ over Central Beds Council owned land linking the High Street to the A507. The committee chose not to heed our four pages of concerns and strong objections. The proposal conflicts with or contravenes numerous points previously adopted by CBC at their executive meeting 18th March 2014 and with stipulations in the MA08 Masterplan for Arlesey. By granting planning permission we expect the High Street will become far more congested according to locals who live, work and travel in Arlesey. Arlesey Town Council did request two conditions be applied should CBC be minded to approve the application. These conditions would have protected the high street from construction traffic, not opened the eastern section of the relief road in isolation and have ensured construction commenced from the A507 as opposed to the High Street. CBC dismissed these conditions without any justifiable reason. At the time of going to press the Council is reviewing CBC’s decision and considering further actions. In addition to ATC there were 25 individual objections, 23 from Arlesey residents. There were only two speakers in favour of approval, one being CBC’s own development agents. Following Lesley’s departure, the Council is recruiting for the position of Assistant Clerk. Nick was an Arlesey town councillor from 2003 to 2015 and Chairman of the Town Council from 2011 to 2015. In the past he had been a governor at Gothic Mede Lower School. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. People were increasingly realising that Conservation wasn’t just about exotic animals in far-away places – much of our local wildlife was and is under threat too. A couple of years later, the Ivel Valley Project was launched, with the aim of enhancing the meadows and countryside along the River Ivel. Local Arlesey residents contacted the Project Officer to persuade him to include the River Hiz within the project, recognising the potential to improve areas like the Mill Pits. Encouraged by this, local enthusiasts held a public meeting at the Mallard Pub, and in 1992 ACORN was born. with Groundw
