News From Etonbury Academy Environment Day - Tuesday 18th June 2013 Pupils at Etonbury Academy took part in an environment day on Tuesday 18th June. Pupils worked with staff to investigate issues such as climate change, sustainability and human’s effect on the environment. Year 8 were involved in a recycling activity where they collected household rubbish over several weeks, turning these into clothes and accessories on the day. The fashion creations were modelled in a fashion show at the end of the day and prizes were awarded. Groups of pupils worked on the gardening area of the school, creating plant beds and planting. Others worked in the brand new Etonbury farm area with our pigs and chickens. Activities in the farm area included: pig racing, clearing an eco shed, erecting a fruit cage, putting up a poly tunnel and fitting a water bath. For some pupils it was the first time that they had worked in a garden or worked with animals. Pupils really enjoyed this new experience and both our farm and gardening area have benefited from their hard work. Music update…... Well done to all the pupils who were involved in the Music Work-shop Day on Monday 17th June. Pupils worked really hard all day to produce a fantastic performance for parents and friends. Thank you to Chris and Charley Pyne for leading the day. Raising Money for Combat Stress and MSF As you may know Etonbury has had two non-school uniform days, but perhaps you may not be aware of what we are supporting. Mrs Binks contacted her favourite author after he posted online that he was going to be raising money for charity. Mrs Binks sent a letter asking if he would give 7JAB a signed book in return for raising money for the charity. Form 7JAB then set to work to achieve this goal. The two charities were: Combat Stress and MSF. Combat Stress is a charity that supports disturbed sol-diers after or fighting in war. MSF is an abbreviation for Medicines Sans Frontiers which means Doctors without Borders; MSF is made up of a band of doctors who decided they wanted to help people who are not as lucky as themselves. The charity is not government run, but a group of amateur doctors. The total overall comes to £485! The book has now been received by Mrs Binks — Fields of Blood by Ben Kane. This is part of the Hannibal Series. By Evie Rickwood 7DG burn down quickly. The theatre has burnt down three times in total. In its most recent rebuild, 1997, the American actor and director Sam Wanamaker has been behind the reconstruction of “Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre”, close to the original site in Southwark. During the tour we took part in a theatrical work shop which was good fun. We also learnt about the Horoscope that covers the entire false ceiling above the stage. By Elliot Beavis 8KL & Max Brown 8BOM Grand Opening of Etonbury Farm Project As we go to press we are on the eve of the grand opening an exciting new project which began early last year with a concept from some very enthusiastic Yr 8 pupils including Steve Thompson, Will Hazelwood, Toby Johnson and Oliver Chellew. We are pleased to announce 12 months later, Eton-bury are ready to open the doors on their farm project for all the community to see. A lot of hard work and a huge amount of enthusiasm has gone into this project, which now sees a working farm with pigs, hens (one of which is sitting on a brood of eggs), and as a future option, geese. A horticulture area that the gardening club are developing, along with a very exciting, new addition in the form of a poly tunnel will enable vegetables to be grown all year round. Adjacent to this and under the guidance of TEASEL we have also started to develop a wildlife area complete with pond and wild flower meadow which we will continue to improve during the autumn. The EACA (Parents Association) have created a new Quite Area within the wild flower area, which takes the form of a wooden outdoor classroom. The verdict from the small number of pupils who have seen the finished structure is “BRILLIANT!” We are very proud of the project so far and look forward to the next phase. We would like to say a big thank you to the members of the local community who have helped with donations, time and a lot of very hard work. ETONBURY FARM IS UP AND RUNNING WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO JOIN OUR WEEKEND ROTA TO HELP AT THE FARM BY FEEDING THE PIGS AND CHICKENS. ANY PUPILS AND PARENTS WILLING TO HELP PLEASE CONTACT MRS RAINBOW EITHER BY CALLING 01462 730391 OR BY EMAIL [email protected] This has been edited and produced by a year 8 Option group – Devon Muriel and Niall Gilbert. Sports Results We had some fantastic sporting results—well done to all of those pupils involved! The Etonbury Key Stage Two Athletics team has won their last two fixtures . We are aiming to get to the finals with one more fixture to complete. All involved have shown great effort, commitment and brilliant achievement.. Years 5, 6 and 8 Rounders’ teams came top of the league in the District Rounders’ league, with the Year 5 and Year 8 team being undefeated!!! Year 8 Globe Visit The Year 8 has recently been on a trip to the Globe Theatre in London. They were taken on a conducted tour of the theatre which is a masterpiece of building in its time. The Globe itself is breath-taking although it has been re built many times. It was originally taken down and moved because Willi am Shakespeare had a disagreement with the land owners. It was then burnt to the ground in 1613, by a cannon used for a performance of Henry VIII set light to the thatched roof and the fire quickly spread, it took 2 hours to Chinese Take Away and Fish & Chips Tel: 01462 731 293 T elephone Orders Welcome 52, High Street, Arlesey, Bedfordshire.
