particularly in rural areas where a
heightened sense of community fosters the
importance of grassroots programs.
Since collaboration between
chiropractors and other health care
practitioners had been rare in her
community, Dr. Longo has actively built
interprofessional bridges. She has used her
expertise in rehabilitation to develop great
working relationships and a strong referral
base within the network of local healthcare
providers. Her community volunteer
work strengthens this effort. Dr. Longo
notes, “Giving back to my community is
satisfying on a personal level, but it also
provides networking opportunities outside
of the healthcare arena.”
For those wishing to become more
involved, Dr. Longo recommends “focusing
on a community event or program that
genuinely interests you, will be satisfying
personally, will provide professional
networking opportunities and will promote
the profession.”

A tireless advocate, a Canada Research
Chair, a smiling face at the front desk, a
doctor on location in a gym, a food bank
president, a pair of healing hands in an
underserved community — these are just
six of the faces of chiropractic in Ontario,
just six of the reasons this profession has
a bright future ahead. The 2014 Award
Recipients share optimism for the future of
the profession and a deep respect for their
