Chiropractor of the Year Dr. Jason Busse Dr. Jason Busse (CMCC, 1999) is well known for his commitment to research, best practices and new approaches for musculoskeletal issues. Academic and clinical interests include chronic pain, disability management, orthopedic medicine, methodological research and other medically unexplained syndromes. Currently an associate professor in McMaster’s department of anesthesia, he was the principal investigator and main editor for the 2017 Canadian Guideline for Opioids for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain which pushed collaboration forward by including spinal manipulation as a non-pharmacological therapy to utilize. Working with an international team of clinicians, researchers and patients, his contribution at the Michael G. DeGroote National Pain Centre was instrumental in the development of the guideline published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Dr. Busse is our chiro of the year for his leadership, investigative passion and ability to advance awareness of approaches to MSK pain in addition to generating a wider conversation about the role chiropractors can play in patient health care. Dr. Michael Brickman Heart & Hands Award Dr. Shawn Thistle Dr. Shawn Thistle (CMCC, 2004) embodies the spirit of the Heart & Hands Award; with his generous giving spirit as an educator within the chiropractic community, and for founding and operating RRS Education, a trusted source of information about evidence-based practice and research for chiropractors across Canada. He is also a faculty member at CMCC in the orthopedics and chiropractic principles departments. His dedication and passion for learning is demonstrated by his mentorship of young clinicians along with his clinical acumen shared with colleagues working on challenging cases particularly those involving complex pain patients. Dr. Thistle has earned the honour of comparison to the memory of Dr. Michael Brickman, an innovator who gave so much to our profession. Leadership involves engaging people in shared goals to meet challenges; recognizing and building on successful accomplishments and learning from previous experience.
