In 2013 , the Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care added chiropractors to the list of health professionals who are eligible to work in Family Health Teams ( FHTs ) and Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics ( NPLCs ). Studies have found that patients with MSK conditions whose physicians participate in collaborative model of care are prescribed fewer medications , receive more referrals to allied health providers and have fewer physician visits . 8
Ontario ’ s Low Back Pain Strategy also includes two provincial pilots : the Interprofessional Spine Assessment and Education Clinics ( ISAEC ) and the Primary Care Low Back Pain ( PCLBP ) pilots , both of
which feature chiropractors in key roles .
ISAEC patients are not on opioid therapy and have persistent lower back related symptoms ( 6 weeks to 12 months post onset ) or unmanageable recurrent low back related symptoms . They receive rapid low back pain assessment ( less than two weeks on average ), education and evidence-based self-management plans . The PCLBP pilot has the added benefit of per day ), NSAIDs , muscle relaxants and SNRIs . But things weren ’ t improving , and she needed help .
In early 2015 , she was enrolled in the Primary Care Low Back Pain program at the Belleville Nurse Practitioner-led
Clinic and she began working with the on-site chiropractor , Dr . Bruce Flynn . In three short months , she became able to walk at least an hour a day , to stand taller , and to discontinue all of her opioids . In a Canadian Chiropractor interview , Dr . Flynn said
“ She now has basically no pain … When she came in she had a frown on her face — almost to a point of depression by appearance . And now she ’ s happy , smiling , and very , very excited to see how much better she can get .” 14
