Dependence
A daughter’s tribute
Some people in this life are shining examples of what it means to be radically
dependent on God. My dad, OMS missionary Mike Shrode, is one of those
examples for me. I think that his radical
dependence came from the radical change
that God made in his life. I don’t remember a lot about his life before Christ. I have
heard stories … stories about a man who
was a hard worker, yet also had a little bit
of a wild side; stories about a man who
drank, smoked, and cussed; a man who
thought that the extent of being a Christian
was to fill a pew every once in a while on a
Sunday morning.
The man I do remember well is a man
who, once he decided to allow God to
become the Lord of his life, quit smoking,

drinking, and cussing immediately. I remember a man who made God his number one priority in his life and in his family’s life … a man who would go to work
in the oil field during the early hours of the
morning on Sunday so he could be home
in time to take us to church. He was a
man who wasn’t afraid to stand up for his
convictions, although that caused him to
lose some friends. He was a man whose
life was radically changed by his Savior.
