Behind the Scenes May-August 2014 Look What God Has Done Volume 114, No. 2 OMS Outreach equips Christians to make disciples of Jesus Christ through informative, inspiring, and involvement-driven articles, which leads to deeper mission participation by serving, giving, and praying. Editor and Director of Communications Susan Griswold Loobie Associate Editor Lori McFall This issue of OMS Outreach magazine has evolved from a “best of” to a “then and now” to a “look what God has done, and look where he is leading us” issue. Through the decades, we have repeatedly seen his faithfulness in leading OMS to transformational ministries, to providing for the Mission and our missionaries financially, to using each of us to change lives for eternity. What a privilege! You, too, are part of this journey. So, sit back, pour a cup of tea, and enjoy this latest issue of Outreach … and rejoice with us as you read about God’s faithful hand over the past century, from our Great Village Campaign in Japan to the work now of saturating entire communities with the Gospel. Celebrate with us as we honor Men for Missions for 60 years of fruitfulness. Through the years, the Lord has used men, women, and children. He’s used evangelism, church planting, and compassionate ministries worldwide. He used OMS then, he’s using us now, and he will no doubt, continue to use us into the future to help fulfill the Great Commission. We hope you are as excited as we are to see what incredible things he has in store … Editor, OMS Outreach [email protected] facebook.com/onemissionsociety twitter.com/1MissionSociety youtube.com/user/OMScommunications linkedin.com/company/one-mission-society Instagram: onemissionsociety Visit our website at www.onemissionsociety.org. 2 Senior Graphic Designer W. By God’s grace, One Mission Society unites, inspires, and equips Christians to make disciples of Jesus Christ, multiplying dynamic communities of believers around the world. One Mission Society is an evangelical, interdenominational faith mission that makes disciples of Jesus Christ through intentional evangelism, planting churches, forming strategic partnerships, and training national leaders in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. OMS then joins with those churches in global partnerships to reach the rest of the world. Office of the President Then Now Tomorrow Lori and I have had the pleasure to spend a little time in Vienna, Austria, a city that is at the center of centuries of rich European history. It was intriguing to wander through museum treasures that depict centuries of history before America was even known to those then alive. It’s a history of empires rising and falling, wars to end all wars, then more wars. Vast changes in the quality of life can be seen as a result of scientific, economic, and political developments. It’s fascinating to look back in history, sometimes just for entertainment but often affording the opportunity to learn new lessons, to better stay the course on which we have been launched. In this issue of Outreach, we take a look back at the history of One Mission Society ministries. We wander through the story of the Great Village Campaign, the inspiration for what is now our church planting ministry, Every Community for Christ (pages 8–9). We look with appreciation at the role women have played in OMS, including Lettie Cowman and her years of leadership, adding historical context to our current ministry to and for women, Dynamic Women in Missions (page 29) and their contributions. We are reminded of the urgency seen by Dwight Ferguson for men to engage in missions and the founding of Men for Missions, a ministry of OMS that has invigorated and sustained OMS in innumerable ways for the past 60 ye \
