In 1986, a few months after Ed Erny had become our OMS President, he sent out a letter to all OMS missionaries informing us that the Mission was in a precarious place financially. He then asked all of us to pray about foregoing a month’ s salary to help with this problem.
Joyce and I were serving in the Philippines at that time, and as we talked and prayed about the request, we felt we should step out in faith and forego a month’ s salary, even though we, too, were tight financially as our salary was small. We informed headquarters not to send our next month’ s pay and watched to see how God would meet our needs.
Shortly after this, we received word from friends and supporters in the Northwest that they had sold their house for a good profit and felt God had prompted them to send us some of that. The amount was almost enough to replace our salary.
We were reminded once again of the faithfulness of God. As we have made faith promises over the past 40 years, we have seen God miraculously supply our needed funds, and we continue to stand in awe as we watch Him continue to challenge us, and then, wonderfully supply.
The issue is not how much can we afford to give to missions, but how much does He want us to trust Him to supply through us.
