In the fall of 2012, OMS missionary kids( MKs) Lydia, Trisha and Kylie Chandler( ages 12, 11 and 9), along with Kayla Crosby( age 7), gathered together for several weeks to create 100 beautiful greeting cards. This fun project became an entrepreneurial mission as they decided to sell the cards to raise money for people in Haiti.
Haiti is close to the Chandler girls’ hearts as they lived there for four years. Both their dad and grandfather worked at OMS’ Radio 4VEH, and they were already collecting coins for the Resounding Hope project, which gets solar radios, tuned to Christian radio station 4VEH, into the hands of Haitians.“ I want to help people in Haiti love Jesus,” Kylie shared.
The girls chose to sell their cards to the staff at the OMS World Headquarters in Greenwood, Indiana. The customers were satisfied and gave generously. Deanna Cathcart, coordinator of the OMS MK ministry, said,“ I think the future of missions looks bright when we have such enthusiastic and hard-working youngsters supporting missions.”
After selling 59 cards, the girls raised $ 69.80— just over the amount needed to purchase one radio.( Each radio costs $ 60.) Asked if she’ d do it again, Kayla responded,“ Yes, I would like to raise money for Ecuador( where her grandparents served for many years and where her mom grew up) by having a jump rope-a-thon!”
Using OMS’ Good News for Africa project( part of the new Good News Reporters in Training VBS), missionary Jason Campbell saw God work in the life of a young boy. Jeremy was excited about the Bibles for Africa mission project. He had been doing chores and had saved $ 30 toward a go-cart. But after hearing about the project, Jeremy decided his money could be put to better use. His mom offered to donate the money so he could keep his, but he refused, saying it would be best if he used his own money.“ Jeremy’ s trust and faith challenges even me!” said his mother.
