Recently, our family enjoyed a brief two-day camping vacation to Red
River Gorge in Kentucky. We loved hiking along the beautiful rock formations and striking cliffs with sheer drop-offs that left you breathless
as you peered over the edge. Our son, Joshua, has fallen in love with
photography and wanted to take night photos of the stars while we
were there. As a family, we spent hours one night on Chimney Top
Rock, which gave us a spectacular scene of a vibrant night sky, bursting with light. While Joshua was taking photos, I was struck in that
moment with the size of the universe. It brought to mind Psalm 8:3–4
and how small man really is and the wonder that we even cross God’s
mind. Our God is truly an awesome God.
My mind continued to wander, and I imagined our Earth, teeming
with more than 7 billion people, all under God’s watchful eye. Does he
really notice each one of us? Is he mindful of those who aren’t aware
that he exists? Does he see the nearly 3 billion who have not yet discovered their Creator? I realized, in that moment, the greatness of our
God, who spoke the universe into being with ease and whose heart is
that each of us would come to know him personally through faith in
Christ (1 Timothy 2:4–5).
When I first heard about OMS’ One Opportunity Vision to reach 1
billion people with the Gospel, I was immediately struck with the size
of that number. As I tried to wrap my mind around 1 billion people, I immediately thought, “How can we ever reach that many people? We’re
too small.” It was the same feeling I had when I looked into the night
sky and the immensity of the universe. Bu B
