Behind the Scenes
When Short-Term Ministry Reveals a Lifelong Calling
In 1986 , I embarked on my first missionary journey . I was a new believer , studying journalism in university . I headed to Mexico City that summer with some fear but also much excitement . Little did I know how this three-month adventure would change my life !
Living with a Mexican family , learning Spanish , working in a church , and ministering with my teammates filled a hole in my heart . I loved it ! When I returned from Mexico to begin my third year of college , I wondered how journalism would fit into a future in missions .
God had a perfect plan to use my degrees in journalism ( bachelor ’ s ) and missions ( master ’ s ). After that powerful summer , I determined to become a career missionary , first serving for several years in Mexico and then for a couple of years in Spain before beginning my journey in missions communication .
Now , after 33 years of full-time ministry , I still tell people how much that first mid-term trip impacted my whole world . We hope this also happens in the lives of many others as they explore One Mission Society ’ s ( OMS ’) Embark experience or one of the dozens of other opportunities to serve with OMS .
