Craig the Super Tusker:
Farewell to Kenya’ s Gentle Giant and a Symbol of Conservation
Kenya has lost one of its most recognisable wildlife ambassadors. Craig, the iconic elephant of Amboseli and one of Africa’ s revered Super Tuskers, died on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the remarkable age of 54. His passing marks the end of an era— not only for Amboseli National Park, but for elephant conservation across the continent.
Craig was more than an elephant. Known globally as the Tusker beer ambassador, Craig bridged the worlds of wildlife conservation, national identity, and popular culture, reminding Kenyans and the global community alike of what is at stake in the fight to protect elephants.

Today, fewer than 40 such elephants are believed to remain across the continent, making Craig a living relic of a time when giant tuskers roamed freely across Africa’ s savannahs.
Yet despite his size, Craig was known for his gentle disposition. Researchers, rangers, photographers, and guides often described him as calm and tolerant, a steady presence within his herd and a familiar figure to generations of visitors to Amboseli.
