FOCUS ON
THE FAMILY
More than 30 police officers and community
members have been honoured for their
contributions to their various communities
in 2017. The Tobago Police Youth Club
Appreciation Awards ceremony was held
by the Community Policing Unit of the
Tobago Division of the T&T Police Service to
recognise officers, youth club leaders and
community policing support officers for their
outstanding work over the past 12 months.
ASP Collis Hazel, who supervises the Unit, is
calling on Tobago’s communities to put their
focus on families in 2018. He believes this will aid
in crime prevention and reduce the Unit’s workload.
Hazel said despite limited manpower, the Unit has
maintained all targets established by the police service.
He added that in 2017, the Unit achieved its goal of “strengthening community engagement
and citizen-centred partnerships”. This year, Hazel said, there will be greater emphasis
on developing neighbourhood watch programmes, and establishing police youth clubs
in secondary schools and children’s homes. The event was held on December 20 at the
Penthouse of the Victor E. Bruce Financial Complex in Scarborough.
ARIA, FIRST
CHRISTMAS BABY
Last week, as Tobagonians celebrated Christmas, Aria Thomas was being born at the
Scarborough General Hospital. Her arrival at 6:04 a.m. made her the first baby born
on Christmas Day in Tobago, and she weighed 6.3 pounds at birth.
The hospital earned the praises of Aria’s mother, twenty-four year old Tessa Burgess.
“The midwife and head nurse were fantastic,” she explained. “They did an excellent
job in helping me through labour and delivery, and definitely made it easier.” Ingrid
Melville, deputy chairman of the Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA) board
of directors congratulated the young mother, and presented her with a hamper on
behalf of the TRHA and the Division of Health, Wellness and Family Development, in
partnership with NGO Tobago Youth for Change. Tobago produced four Christmas
Day babies: three girls and one boy.
