When he was 17-year-old Phelps had set five world records, including the 200-meter individual medley at the World Championships in Spain, with a time of 1:56:04 and at the U.S. trials for the 2004 Summer Olympics, where he broke his own record of 400 meter individual medley, with 4:08:41.
When the Olympic Games had been in Athens in 2004 he won 8 medals: 6 of them were of gold. The weeks following his triumph there, he was arrested fro driving under the influence of alcohol and crusing a stp sign.
Just weeks following his triumph in Athens, Phelps was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Salisbury.
In 2012, Phelps's Olympic medal increased to 22, setting a record for most Olympic medals.
There he won four gold medals, in the 4-by-200-meter freestyle relay, 200-meter individual medley, 100-meter butterfly and 4-by-100-meter medley relay; and two silver medals, in the 4-by-100-meter freestyle relay and 200-meter butterfly.
