DEVELOPMENT AND SCHOOL NEWS

DEVELOPMENT
MEET THE NEW DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
Jenny Preston , the School ’ s new Development Officer was appointed in March 2021 . She takes over the role from Susan Kay who left the School at the end of 2021 to pursue other projects and spend more time with her family .
On starting her new job , Jenny said : “ I am delighted to be taking on this role in such a special School ; an institution with rich and varied foundations and over 500 years of history . In the first few months , I have enjoyed walking around School , soaking up the atmosphere and seeing our incredible young people thriving , making the most of the opportunities offered and adding value in so many ways . I have had the pleasure of seeing Fenton ’ s field scattered with pupils enjoying the sunshine ; talking , playing and reading and even an alfresco lunch on one of the hottest days of term .
Watching cricket on Big Field , the tennis courts and hockey pitches alive with the sounds of competitive fun , I feel I have had an opportunity to witness the Pocklington spirit in full . I was inspired walking around the Art and Design Centre , looking at the course work from the GCSE and A Level students .
There were beautiful sounds coming from the Music room windows and I had the great pleasure of attending the lower school production of Treasure Island : inspiring indeed .
In my role here , I will have the great pleasure of meeting many of the Pocklington School family . I hope very much to have the opportunity to get to know OPs over the coming months , to hear your school-day memories and about your life today . You are warmly welcome to visit us for a quick hello or a tour ; just give Rachel or I a call beforehand to book a slot . There are also many events and reunions that I would be delighted to see you at .
I passionately believe that all children should have access to the very best in education , and hope that I can extend Pocklington School ’ s offer widely to those pupils who would benefit most .”
Jenny is a current parent at the School and has a background in fundraising having previously worked with the HEY Smile Foundation in Hull supporting local charities , volunteers and community groups . The OP office is delighted to be working with Jenny in her role as Pocklington School Development Officer .

SHAPE THE FUTURE BURSARY CAMPAIGN
The School is pleased to announce that its Shape the Future bursary campaign is now up and running and , over the course of the next year , Development Officer , Jenny Preston , will be contacting OPs to explain more about the School ’ s activities and how to help .
There are several ways to support this campaign , including the ‘ annual fund ’ to help those with immediate need and an opportunity to join the School ’ s regular giving programme . If you would like to discuss ways in which you can support the campaign to open the opportunities of studying at
Pocklington School for deserving students , please do get in touch with Jenny . If you have given your
consent to be contacted about fundraising , the School will be in touch with you about the campaign .
1514 LEGACY GIFT
The School was delighted to receive a bequest from David Stather ( 49-57 ) of a book once owned by William Wilberforce . On opening the book , school archivist Angie Edwards discovered Wilberforce ’ s book plate , together with a letter written by him to a local bishop . The book is available for viewing , by prior appointment , should OPs be interested .
David was a lifelong supporter of Pocklington School and a founder member of the 1514 club and the School is grateful that he made this bequest . A tribute to David can be found on page 29 of this magazine .
OPs can support the Shape the Future legacy campaign by letting the development office know if Pocklington School has been included in your Will .
If you are happy to do this , the School will invite you to become a member of its legacy society , the 1514 club . Members of the 1514 Club are invited to attend special annual events .
If you would like to join them and find out more about supporting the Shape the Future Legacy Campaign , please contact Jenny Preston at prestonj @ pocklingtonschool . com
