OP GOLFERS TAKE ON OLD HYMERIANS AT GANTON
On Wednesday 11 August , the first of what will hopefully be an annual golf match between Old Pocklingtonians and Old Hymerians took place at the prestigious Ganton Golf Club .
OH captain , Jonathan Leafe brought along a silver ( former athletics ) trophy which was last competed for in 1946 , at a time when Hymers ’ students had been evacuated to Pocklington during the repeated bombing of Hull . It was decided to re-name this “ The Friendship Trophy ”; indeed , plenty of “ friendly banter ” took place before and after the match !
It is fair to say that the mostly higher handicap OH players took advantage of their shots , much to the frustration of the OPs who found the demands of this tough layout rather challenging on the day . The first match , with Richard Clough ( 84-91 ) and Denton Guest ( 69-74 ) representing the OPs , was halved thanks to Denton holing a long putt on the 18th green . Then it became somewhat of an OH domination , with the OP second pairing of Mike Strong ( 66-76 ) and Mark Addison ( 69-76 ) going down 6 & 5 before
Back Row L to R : OH , OH , OH , David Stephenson , OH , Richard Brown , Richard Clough , Trevor Loten ; Front Row L to R : OH , OH , OH , Stephen St . Quinton , OH - regretfully , three OPs were not able to stay for the presentation and photo call .
both the third and fourth pairings of Trevor Loten ( 70-80 ) and David Stephenson ( 77-81 ) and ( captain ) Steve St . Quinton ( 64-74 ) and
Richard Brown ( 82-87 ) were defeated 2 & 1 . So , the overall match result was OH 3.5 - 0.5 OP ; we are already looking forward to the re-match !
OP TENNIS
Two teams of five players were drawn to play a combination of mixed doubles , men ’ s doubles and men ’ s singles . “ Team A ” consisted of Millie Goode , Zak Los , George Hobson , Charlie Laverack and Thomas Dyson ( School Captain ), with “ Team B ” being Sue Sumner ( former staff ), Patrick Dare ( current staff ), Tom Hitchenor , James Bisson and Trevor Loten . The match was predictably close , with team B just edging it 5-4 .
There was an opportunity to reminisce afterwards over light refreshments at the pavilion where Trevor was presented with a surprise retirement gift from Zak , George , Louis , Tom and James ! Trevor retired at the end of August 2021 after 35 years as a teacher at the school and this was his last OP tennis event as a member of the school staff – no doubt he will be back next year on top form in his capacity as an OP !
Thank you to everyone for playing , and hopefully the Edmund-Loten mixed doubles competition will return in a more “ normal ” OP Sumer Reunion next year .
