PIXIES ROUND UP 2021
PIXIES CC ANNUAL REPORT 2021 was a year that looked slightly more normal yet still had the threat of being disrupted by Covid looming over it . However , in reality it was great to get back on the pitch and it was a year for large scores !
In a fixture versus the school which was linked to the OP Summer Reunion day ( see separate report ), a fitting tribute to Malcolm Milne was paid with the school ’ s scoreboard being renovated and named after a legend of a man . It was fitting that Harry Jones of the school was the person to score a 100 in front of the crowd ; Malcolm would have been proud to see school cricket thriving and would encourage all to “ keep coming back ”. In reply , Will Watts ( 14- 20 ) looked composed and collected at the crease before the English weather stopped him also scoring a century leaving him stranded on 86 * when the rain stopped play .
Versus the town , the Pixies played the Worsley Cup with the youngsters starring with both bat and ball ; Henry Bayston ( 10-17 ) carried on his fine club form scoring a great century , and wickets were shared around as the Worsley Cup remained in the hands of the Pixies .
Unfortunately , the game versus the Yorkshire Gents was cancelled due to Covid in the YGs ranks and we look forward to reinstating the fixture next year .
Tour 2021 saw 17 players and an umpire set off on a wet and windy early morning down south . With another four people meeting us there , it was clear that it would be a good tour with some welcome young additions from the school ranks .
The games versus Eastbourne and Haywards Heath were called off due to the previously mentioned weather however a small trip to the races at Lingfield and the customary visit to Keeley bat makers filled these days well .
Holmesdale did well to get the game on and it was a high scoring affair against a young Holmesdale side .
Jack Bolam ( 96-05 ) scored a great 100 and with wickets shared between Rob Boddy ( 08-19 ) ( 5 ) and Jonty Goddard ( 11-19 ) ( 3 ) the result was never in doubt with a comprehensive win coming the Pixies way .
Marden was always going to be an emotional day with the club being a favourite of Malcolm ’ s . Black armbands were worn and he was remembered highly by the Day family before a fantastic day of cricket played in the strong Kent sun . This day will always be remembered in Pixie history as Jack Bolam scored 102 and became the out and out Pixie with the most hundreds . In what was a tense finish the Pixies won with just two overs left .
Our final game on tour was at Hastings and whilst Oliver Rook ( current pupil ) played for Hastings , he showed the true spirit of cricket , batting with style and helping Hastings reach 170 off their 40 overs . In reply runs were scored quickly with Charlie Lambert ( 01-08 ), Chris Suddaby ( 02-10 ) and Jack Bolam all making 30 however wickets tumbled quickly . It was down to the experience of Joe Moore ( 82-91 ) to lead the Pixies home .
Thank you to all clubs who hosted us and it was great to be back on the road .
Our final game of the year was against the Men of Derwent at Woodhouse Grange in the Alistair Swann Trophy . There were numerous pupils , OPs and current staff present in what was a great game of cricket . Billy Higgins ( 00-07 ) took some early wickets however Chris Bilton took the MoD to a good score of 182 . In reply the highlight was the father ( Charles , 87-97 ) and son ( Oliver ) Rook pair batting together . Unfortunately , the Pixies fell just short and the trophy was won by the Men of Derwent .
Thank you to all who played this season , keep coming back and we look forward to 2022 . Thank you to Paul Lambert ( OP parent ) who umpired and to Matt Atkinson ( 85-93 ), Joe Moore , Marcus Townend ( 72-82 ) and Charlie Lambert for their help in organising another summer of nomadic cricket .
Father , Charles Rook ( 87-97 ) played for the OPs / Pixies whilst son , Oliver Rook , played for the school .
