Tornado Rose
FINDS SOUND DURING A KANSAS TORNADO
by ADAM MILLER
Tornado Rose delivers an uplifting blend of Americana, bluegrass, country and folk with gorgeous vocals and high flying strings. Lead singer and songwriter Brooke Bell’ s voice shines with an enchanting power and clarity, beautifully supported by rich bass lines, captivating melodies and smooth solos that infuse incredible depth into each song allowing your imagination to soar.
Brooke is proficient in playing the guitar, autoharp and fiddle. Her exceptional vocal abilities compliment her songwriting, which often reflects her experience growing up in the small town of Independence, Kansas and earned her first place in the Love Song Category for her song‘ Wilderwood Flower’ at the 2014 Winfield Bluegrass Festival. Josh Bell is the double-bass player for the band. He has been mentored by Daniel Kimbro of the Jerry Douglas Band and local DC legend Steve Wolf. Ryan Davidson on mandolin is a student of legendary multi-instrumentalist Rickie Simpkins. Kyle Jacobs on banjo mixes Scruggs rolls with an enticing percussive technique.
Steeped in the rich traditions of the Kansas plains, the captivating Tornado Rose has set their sights eastward to the Washington, DC metro area, embarking on a heartfelt journey of musical exploration that weaves the soulful sounds of Appalachia into their ever-evolving tapestry. Every member contributes their unique essence to this beautifully harmonious gathering of kindred spirits united in their love for music.
Tornado Rose was born on May 21, 2011 – the fateful end date of the Mayan calendar – when the band survived a massive EF5 tornado in a campground bathroom while camped at Pomona Lake, KS. A fierce storm descended, unexpectedly compelling the band to seek refuge. As they survived the tumultuous night and witnessed the dawn’ s early light, they emerged with a profound respect for life and a newfound sound. And it was Brooke Bell who blossomed as the rose that emerged from that chaotic tornado.
