IBF ’ s Youth Band Competition was developed to encourage the younger generation of musicians by offering performance opportunities and exposure at the festival . The competition is open to any band with participants under the age of 18 . The youth are judged on their acoustic-only bluegrass performance . Professional musicians make up the panel of judges and base the competition on four aspects :
• 30 points ARRANGEMENT – Competitors version of the tune selected . Difficulty and originality will be considered .
• 30 points EXECUTION – Singing , picking , timing and dynamics will be considered .
• 30 points SHOWMANSHIP – Stage presence and entertainment values will be considered .
• 10 points OVERALL IMPRESSION – Judges ’ decisions are final . After the last band ’ s performance , the judges ’ scores will be tallied and the winning band will be selected . Final scores are not divulged .
Registration for the Youth Band Competition is between 9:00 a . m . and 10:00 a . m . on Saturday morning at the Youth Tent . Competition begins at 10:00 a . m .
The youth band , Prairie Grass , took first place in last year ’ s competition .
They are a family band from Locust Grove , Oklahoma made up of Claire , Cameron and Carly Friend .
" We were all very nervous as last years ' OIBF was the kids ' first time on stage as a band and also their first competition . It was really amazing to see them working together on stage . They had a blast making these memories , and were so encouraged to continue practicing together for the next year . They have been talking about it ever since !"
