W hen Byron Berline and the founders of OIBF designed this festival , they had their eyes set to the future .

With the goal of bringing bluegrass to a multitude of generations , they knew they needed to include youth when carrying on the musical skill and enjoyment this genre brings . That is why the Mike Clark Scholarship Program was developed and continues to positively impact lives today .
Andrew Hunt , the scholarship chair , was himself a recipient of OIBF ’ s musical scholarship as a youngster . “ There aren ’ t as many programs that help you learn about folk or bluegrass music . This is a way for kids to find their path into music ,” Andrew said of the importance of these scholarships .
The scholarship fund is intended for students 16 yearsold or younger and focuses on musical knowledge acquisition in the genres of bluegrass , folk music , western swing , and traditional country . Recipients are able to apply their award in the form of lessons , musical experiences , and being around those who are masters in their musical craft .
One of the program ’ s goals is to increase the number of applicants . While the applicant pool is competitive , OIBF is searching for the best and brightest to enhance the genre ’ s reach . In order to increase your odds of getting an award , applicants are encouraged to put their very best into a video recording which showcases their talents and to pay attention to the details in the application .
“ As a recipient of this scholarship , I want to extend a personal thank you to the founders of this program . It has helped me grow as a musician and a person ,” said Hunt who is a believer and true testament to the power of bluegrass and the community it builds .
Ticket sales , proceeds from the auction , and donations are revenues which support this scholarship program . Donations typically range from $ 20- $ 100 to help build young musicians ’ confidence and skill and keeps the music alive .
