Brooke Bell serves as the lead songwriter and is proficient in playing the guitar , autoharp , and fiddle . Her exceptional vocal abilities complement her songwriting , which often reflects her experiences growing up in a small-town of Kansas . A significant influence on her work has been Byron Berline , particularly following her participation in one of his fiddle classes . Notably , she earned first place in the “ Love Song Category ” at the 2013 Winfield Bluegrass Festival .
Joshua Bell contributes by playing the double bass , is self-taught , and draws inspiration from the Jerry Douglas Band and Daniel Kimbo . Dustin Gill plays the mandolin and is based in Kansas City , while Phil Kilmer is a talented singer , songwriter , and flat picker .
Tornado Rose was born on May 11 , 2011 — the fateful end of the Mayan calendar — in a humble campground bathroom in Pamona Lake , KS . A fierce storm descended unexpectedly , compelling the band to seek refuge . As they survived the tumultuous night and witnessed the dawn ' s light , they emerged with a profound respect for life and a newfound sound . And it was Brooke who would blossom as the rose that emerged from that chaotic tornado .
While half of the band remains in the plains , Brook and Joshua have relocated to Maryland . This transition has not hindered their progress ; they have already produced five albums and are currently working on their sixth . Residing in the eastern part of the country , they are experiencing a new musical influence that they are integrating into their latest album . Additionally , they have been motivated to enhance their skills after a weekend at Old Fiddlers Convention in Southwest Virginia . With these new techniques , they feel more confident and empowered than ever before .
