Scholarship Winners 2022 MIKE CLARK SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
E ach year , Oklahoma ’ s International Bluegrass Festival considers the talents of many young musical applicants in search of financial assistance to further their skills . More than $ 9,000 was proudly granted to 12 applicants this year . The most common use of scholarships is for private lessons or to attend music camps , which helps to build the student ’ s repertoire .
10-year old McKenna Petersen is one such recipient . In July , the young fiddle player used her $ 1,000 in scholarship money to attend the Annie Moses Summer Music Festival in Franklin , Tennessee . Classes were taught by members of the Annie Moses Band . Peterson participated in two full length Broadway style musicals and performed in the orchestra for the Gala Concert . She was able to further her experiences in acting , singing and fiddling .
The scholarship awards are named for Mike Clark , a dedicated banjo player and a founder of OIBF . He is also a founding member of the Greater Oklahoma Society of Bluegrass Music .
Funding for the Scholarships comes from ticket sales , merchandise purchases , corporate sponsorships , proceeds from the annual auction and individual donations . OIBF is a non-profit , 501 ( c ) 3 organization which enable donations to be tax deductible . Interested persons wishing to donate may do so any time during the festival or by following the instructions on oibf . com . The festival mission is to bring music , especially bluegrass , to as many youngsters as possible .
The festival also receives assistance from the Oklahoma Arts Council and National Endowment of the Arts . Applicants must be between the ages of 10-19 to be eligible . An applicant must send in a tape playing a traditional acoustic instrument : such as acoustic guitar , fiddle , mandolin , bass , resophonic guitar or banjo . A music teacher or a performing adult artist must sponsor each entry by sending a letter of recommendation . Previous scholarship winners who continue to meeting the eligibility requirements must reapply each year . IBF
