BLUE CANYON BOYS

Equal parts purists and innovators , the Blue Canyon Boys stay true to bluegrass roots . The toe-tapping mix is a result of genre-bending arrangements and original numbers . Their brotherduet style offers crisp instrumentation , unvarnished lyrics and humor .

The band won first place in the 2008 Telluride Bluegrass Festival band contest which launched the Blue Canyon Boys into illustrious venues across the country as well as internationally . Their high lonesome sound , harmonies and fierce rhythms drive their music .
Kentucky native Gary Dark plays the mandolin and contributes many original songs to the band . His amazing tenor singing puts the

BARRY “ BONES ” PATTON

T hough Winfield ’ s Barry Patton celebrates 24 years of playing the bones at this year ’ s festival , his history with the event goes back to when he was a boy . He first heard the bones played by Cecil Hiatt at a bluegrass festival in the 1960s . Known as the Grand Master of the bones , Hiatt was playing onstage with Barry ’ s grandfather , Lue Berline , and his uncle , Byron Berline .

During the festival , his grandfather accidentally shut Patton ’ s fingers in a car door and felt so bad about it that he gave Patton his first pair of oak bones and one short lesson . From then on , he practiced and practiced , broken fingers and all , and the rest is history .
Today Patton is one of the premier bones players in the world . Not only
“ high ” in the band ’ s high lonesome sound . Gary ’ s soaring voice often elicits enthusiastic responses from audiences , and his unique and highspeed mandolin style adds to the musical excitement .
Guitarist Jason Hicks also writes material for the band , and his interest in pioneering guitarists such as Don Reno and Norman Blake has helped him develop a style that draws from the raw emotional energy of the past .
Drew Garrett slaps a mean bass and sings baritone vocals with the band . His credits include the innovative and award winning 80 ’ s newgrass band “ Danger In The Air ”,.
Banjo wizard Chris Roszell moved from North Carolina to Denver in the summer of 2017 to plug into the Colorado music scene . In NC , he was a member of Big Fat Gap – an enthusiastically local bluegrass band
can Patton play the bones with either hand , he can play the bones with both hands , and at the same time . He is one of the few “ two fisted bone rattlers ” in the world .
Traditionally bones were made out of cattle ribs , but Patton prefers to make his own out of Osage wood . A regular fixture at the festival , his fans are always delighted by his energy and big grin .
Recently , Patton and the band Cliff Top ( performing at OIBF this year ) met at The Music Room in Edmond , OK .
That meeting led to the EP , Fiddle & Bones . This group of bluegrass and old time music lovers had set out to produce a single video for Red Haired Boy , and it grew into a four track EP in less than two hours . IBF
that served as the training ground for future bluegrass stars . Wielding his banjo , Chris Roszell plays more notes than any other member of the Blue Canyon Boys . IBF
