Introduction to Convention
By OJCL Treasurer Maggie Ridgeway (Bexley)
If you’ve never been to an OJCL convention, it can be confusing and scary.
However, there are so many amazing things to try! Here are seven awesome things
you should do during your first OJCL convention!
1. Colloquia: Colloquia are talks given by various speakers on so many
interesting Classics-related topics. You should go to as many as you can, they
can be incredibly interactive, and you’ll learn things you wouldn’t be able to in
a normal classroom.
2.
Contests: From costumes to dramatic interpretation to textiles, there are a
wide variety of competitions you can register for at
the OJCL competition. These can seem high
pressure, but there’s no harm in trying something
new, and the judges are always very friendly.
3.
Testing: While most people don’t find the
idea of taking tests to be appealing, it’s a lot more
interesting than you’d expect. Every year I find
myself leaving testing sessions with more that I
want to learn. Just try your best – you may be
surprised with the outcome!
4.
Agora: There are plenty of interesting
pieces of merchandise to browse at Agora! From
hoodies to books, the OJCL and its different
chapters have plenty of fun souvenirs to sell every
year.
5.
Election Events: There are multiple events

related to the election of the new OJCL executive
board at convention. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how the OJCL
works. Meet the Candidates always offers some funny moments when candidates
answer silly questions, including favorite Pokemon and the organization of sock
drawers.
