Introduction to Convention By OJCL Treasurer Maggie Ridgeway (Bexley) If you’ve never been to an OJCL convention, it can be confusing and scary. However, there are so many amazing things to try! Here are seven awesome things you should do during your first OJCL convention! 1. Colloquia: Colloquia are talks given by various speakers on so many interesting Classics-related topics. You should go to as many as you can, they can be incredibly interactive, and you’ll learn things you wouldn’t be able to in a normal classroom. 2. Contests: From costumes to dramatic interpretation to textiles, there are a wide variety of competitions you can register for at the OJCL competition. These can seem high pressure, but there’s no harm in trying something new, and the judges are always very friendly. 3. Testing: While most people don’t find the idea of taking tests to be appealing, it’s a lot more interesting than you’d expect. Every year I find myself leaving testing sessions with more that I want to learn. Just try your best – you may be surprised with the outcome! 4. Agora: There are plenty of interesting pieces of merchandise to browse at Agora! From hoodies to books, the OJCL and its different chapters have plenty of fun souvenirs to sell every year. 5. Election Events: There are multiple events Some of the awards you might win! related to the election of the new OJCL executive board at convention. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how the OJCL works. Meet the Candidates always offers some funny moments when candidates answer silly questions, including favorite Pokemon and the organization of sock drawers. page 7
