Introduction to Colloquia By OJCL President Ryan Burns (Summit Country Day) Colloquium, Colloquia in the plural, ultimately from the Latin word “loquor” meaning to speak literally means “speak together.” This literal meaning, however, does not quite do the word justice. A colloquium is more than just people talking together. It can be interactive, informative, and educational. Specifically, at OJCL state convention, colloquia are sessions run by OJCL officers, Latin teachers, or college Classics professors who want to share their love of the Classics with the next generation. These colloquia can range from a JCL Trivia Kahoot! to presentations on ancient Roman armor to a mock Roman election. There is also the service colloquium, which is always crowded, so it is a great way to meet new people and get involved in the JCL value of service. Colloquia are one of my favorite ways to spend time at convention because of the people I meet and the knowledge I gain. College Classics professors and page 23
