When Achilles Took a Tumble
By OJCL South Gubernator Chloe Constadinides (Wyoming)
One of the best parts of Convention (quite possibly the best part) is the skit
competition. I was first introduced to skit by my middle school teacher who
suggested I should try it out. At first, I thought she meant help writing the script,
maybe assemble some costumes,
until my teacher cast me as
Achilles. I was incredibly
nervous. I was never the type to
enjoy acting, but I was willing to
take on the challenge. It was a
pretty fun process, learning lines,
blocking scenes, rehearsing.
However, the part seventh grade
Chloe was excited about was
getting costumes! The plan for
my costume was by far the most
epic plan out of all the middle
schoolers. It was a customized
suit of Roman body armor made
of the best carboard and duct-
tape ten dollars could buy. It was
a day before convention, as I
Chloe’s ‘well-fitting’ costume
rehearsed, the high schoolers
tirelessly worked to get my
costume finished. By five o’clock it was done, and I tried it on. The armor was a
bit roomy to say the least. It was fitted for a high schooler standing at a mighty five
feet five inches, and I was a measly four foot six. It was less of a suit of armor, and
more of a mid-thigh box dress. Being so close to convention there was no time to
fix it, and so, we were off.
It was finally time to go up on stage and perform. I was anxious, excited,
and slightly sweaty (who knew cardboard was an excellent insulator). The skit was
going swimmingly. No one forgot their lines, everyone laughed at the jokes,
