reign; in reality, Nero had no other
choice than to kill the possible
usurper. Agrippina had grown closer
to his wife, Octavia, and some could
have seen an attempt on the emperor's
life -- something which Agrippina had
done less than a decade before. While
some historians have argued that his
mind was corrupted by a woman with
whom he was having an affair, this is
almost definitely just the subjective
truth created by Seutonius to attack the Empire.
OJCLers at a Roman Banquet
The greatest lie thrown at Nero is his role
during the Great Fire of Rome. Seutonius and Dio allege that he started and sang
while the city burned--both of which are almost definitely inaccurate. However,
according to Tacitus, Nero was in Antium during the fire, and when he heard about
the fire, Nero immediately returned to the city. Here, he began a relief effort from
his wealth and searched for the victims himself with no protection. Nero opened
his home to provide shelter for the homeless and food for the hungry. The city was
rebuilt under his rule to prevent any further fires.
However, despite his great reign, Governor Vindex revolted, and ultimately
caused the suicide of the great Emperor. With an objective look at history, not only
emperor Nero should not be considered the worst emperor in Roman history, but it
can also be argued that Nero was a good Emperor.
Wyoming Chapter Update!
Wyoming Latin Club got many things done during the first semester, and we are
currently working on many different convention projects. So far, we’ve had events
like toga bowling, where we went bowling with the Indian Hill Latin Club. We’ve
also continued to teach lessons to kids interested in joining Latin Club at the middle
school. This program has proved very successful, and we’ve raised much interest in
Latin. Currently, we have people working on our skit for Convention, cheer videos,
and our convention commercial. All individual members of Latin Club are working
on their own projects and continue to do so. We are looking forward to a great time
at Latin Convention!
