Recent Roman Discoveries

Part II

Historian Philip Towbin (Sycamore)

We’ve already talked about some great discoveries in the last edition of the Torch, however, since then, there have been many more discoveries that have shocked the world! Let's dive into two more amazing finds in this winter edition of the Torch!

Interamna Lirenas:

Recently, a group of archaeologists began to reinvestigate the ruins of a Roman riverport called Interamna Lirenas. To do this, they did a geographical survey and found many interesting things. Even when the Roman Empire was said to be in major decline, this town thrived greatly. It adapted to many different changing atmospheres and resisted destruction. To add onto this, there was found to be a roofed theatre that was said to be able to seat 1,500 people. What’s so exciting about this discovery is that it gives more information about this town and shows that other towns similar to Interamna Lirenas could have existed for longer periods of time than previously thought.
