The Summit Country Day Latin Club finished 2017
strongly. We hosted our Celebration of the Classics for both
middle schoolers and high schoolers to attend where we
celebrated a night dedicated to Homer’s epic, The Odyssey. In
their Latin classes, students created projects based on certain
stories from the epic, such as a 3-D Model of Scylla and
Charybdis or a tile mosaic on the contest of the bow. All of
these projects were put on display for viewing for the entire
night while people were talking and enjoying the abundance of
food. Some students filmed videos as their projects and these
were also shown. The highlight was definitely Mr. Dean’s Greek
class’s interpretation of the entire Odyssey. The night
concluded with certamen rounds based solely on the Odyssey.
Overall, this was a very successful event and attracted both
middle schoolers and high schoolers.
The Summit Latin Club also participated in the Out of the
Darkness walk for suicide prevention in October. The students
donated and walked through downtown Cincinnati to help raise
awareness for suicide and mental illness. We were able to
collect donations of over $2,500. The classic and factually
correct Disney’s “Hercules” was shown on a pizza movie night,
and the students enjoyed laughing and soaking in the completely
accurate mythology. We also held a service event at Pregnancy
Center East where students sorted the donations they received.
The next big event for the club is to help set up for the
Summit certamen in February. We are currently getting ready
for convention in March in terms of both club projects and
studying. We can’t wait to see everyone at state soon!
