During the Pax Romana military service would provide work, housing and a steady income for 25 years of your life. The requirements at the time were as follows: male, a roman citizen, in good health, over 5'4 with exceptions made for sturdy men, and preferably from a good profession. In this period many legionary soldiers would not see any major battles. Soldiers would spend their time going on missions, training or maintaining the military camp. Some of the missions legionary soldiers could be expected to provide safe passage for goods and operating gates and toll booths. Duties at the military camp would include sentry dutry, cleaning the latrines, and helping in the stores. After completing their daily duties, soldiers would have leisure time after dinner. Soldiers could go into town and fratranize with local women, catch up on mail from home, or bathe. If a legionary was set to go on campaign he would know well in advance. This allowed him to increase the vigour of his training and practice his digging before he left.
