community one which developed my leadership, maturity, and confidence. I am now a student at the University of Cincinnati, studying Medical Sciences and minoring in Classical Civilization, and I plan on participating in SCL as much as possible! Some other activities I now participate in include Free the Slaves — UC Chapter, neurodevelopment research at Cincinnati Children’s, and my social media internship with the University Scholars Leadership Symposium.” Brian Johnson (Shaker Heights): “My name is Brian Johnson, I graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 2017. I attended OJCL convention for 5 years. I served as OJCL Parliamentarian for the 2015-2016 year, and then served as OJCL President for the 2016-2017 year. I also competed as part of Shaker Heights' Uppers Certamen Team in 2017. Currently, I am a first year student at the University of Chicago, in the Hyde Park area of Chicago, IL. I haven't chosen a major yet. Outside of schoolwork, I have competed with the University of Chicago Mock Trial Team, worked at the Institute of Politics, and participated in programs at the University Community Service Center. Beyond that, my friends and I try to go to the city whenever we can, in order to experience everything Chicago has to offer.” Julia Cardinal (McAuley): “I graduated from McAuley High School last May before heading off to Duquesne University where I am currently studying Latin and History. In high school, I attended every convention I could and most of the regional events. I served two terms on the Executive Board as Southwest Gubernator and First Vice President. At conventions, I loved to compete in the creative arts contests since I was able to become someone from classics and bring them to life. The social, academic, and leadership skills fostered by the JCL have proven helpful in college. I am an Undergraduate Assistant and Latin Tutor for the Department of Classics. When I'm not at the library, I spend my time volunteering with campus ministry, participating in various organizations, and exploring downtown Pittsburgh with my friends. And of course, you'll still see me at OJCL events as a part of the SCL!” 37
