1. Certamen! (And Local Certamen Events)
If there's one thing I love about Thursdays, it is my school's weekly Certamen practices, which just started back up at the beginning of September. Certamen–otherwise known as Latin quiz bowl– is a fun-filled, stress-free way to brush up on all things classical mythology, grammar, derivative, or geography-related! It's perfect for anyone who thinks they have an unending collection of obscure facts stored in the depths of their brain.
2. Prepare for State Pre-Con Contests, Banners, & T-shirts
One item that can never be completed too early are Pre-Con contests, the delegation Banners, and t-shirt designs. In a flash November, December, and January will zoom by. Next thing you'll know, it'll be a few days before State Convention at Crowne Plaza, from March 8th-10th! Pre-Convention Contest preparation is not fun when under a time crunch– trust me, I know. What's the solution to this pressing dilemma? Start State Convention prep with your delegation NOW! At your local Classics club, start bouncing ideas around for your banner and t-shirt. These designs should be based off of this year's convention theme: leve fit, quod bene fertur, onus.
"The burden is light if you know how to support it" (Ovid, Amores 1.2.10). Do some Classics-related artwork in your free time to submit to graphic arts. Write a haiku about the 7 kings of Rome! There is so much to do at State Convention. By planning early, you'll have a wider breadth of events to experience!
3. Recruit More Latin Students to the Cult!
Last but not least, recruitment is critical in ensuring that the OJCL is a fun-filled environment for all JCLers. You wouldn't want to experience OJCL festivities without a friend, would you? Looking back on the first time I joined my school's JCL, I don't think I would have joined if it wasn't through the encouragement of my friends! This month, try to encourage at least one friend to join you at a JCL-related event. You never know, it could be the spark that ignites a life-long love of the Classics!
