Sycamore
Grant Bruner
Sycamore has a lot to look forward to in 2017! Our chapter has been growing at
an exponential rate, from just a handful in 2015 to over 25 committed Latin club members this year. A lot of our new members come from the incoming freshman class, especially young student leaders Ashna Pradesh and Alex Ma. But we have plenty of experienced Latin students as well: Grant Bruner, a junior, will be attending his 5th JCL convention this year.
With a strong base behind us, Sycamore is very excited to plan even more events next year. The first major event of the year, our“ Vesperna Sancta” Halloween party, will be the first hurdle for our two consuls. We plan on eating some sweet treats, learning about Roman funerary epigrams, and playing the wildly popular“ Taberna Trivia.” Throw in some Certamen, and you can’ t help but have a good time!
Our next recurring event, the second annual Saturnalia bash, is in early December. We start the festivities by rolling dice to pick the Magister Bibendi— our defending champion is Sophomore Connor Close, who managed a Venus throw last year! Then, the Magister Bibendi decides the exact mixture of grape juice and sprite, and passes out the drinks. Saturnalia is our favorite event, and we hope to have a turnout of over 35 students this year.
CLUB UPDATES
When Sycamore students aren’ t celebrating one of the four major events of the year, they’ re often playing Certamen or doing Latin puzzles. Certamen in particular has become our favorite activity, so much so that we often run out of buzzers! The sophomore class, especially Latin club regular Deepto Chattergee, are especially involved in studying for certamen. But even if students aren’ t Certamen-minded, there is still lots to do. This year, we will be re-working our main promotional posters in the hallway, repairing our standard— the“ Sycamore Fungus”— and building a miniature temple. If all goes as planned, these projects will be inaugurated by the Saturnalia event in early December.
With so much going on, it’ s hard to not be deeply involved in Sycamore Latin club this year. With a lot of hard work and small weekly contributions from a variety of students, we are v Type to enter text ery excited to make our dreams a reality. Per aspera, ad astra!
