management activities, etc.
Over the years, many TUV Functional Safety Engineer training courses have been given and today the
managing director Bert Knegtering has the longest track record offering these courses.

hat is ESSAIES?
ESSAIES is a young independent
consulting company founded in 2018. ESSAIES:
the phonetic of SIS, the abbreviation of Safety
Instrumented Systems. ESSAIES: narrations,
stories, experiences, all about SIS.S mall,
Intelligent, Systematic, flexible and efficient. The
objective of ESSAIES is clear: help the process
industry to protect their assets. Avoid incidents,
production loss and damage. Giving you and
your peers a piece of mind.
Who we are
Bert Knegtering was born in Eindhoven, the
Netherlands on 11 October 1967. He obtained
his MSc. in mechanical engineering at the
Eindhoven University of Technology, where he
performed his Master’s project within the chair
Reliability of Mechanical Equipment. Since
1996, he has been working for Honeywell Safety
Management Systems in the area of safety and
reliability engineering. As a senior consultant in
industrial process safety, he is closely associated
with the application of safety-related systems in
the most effective and efficient way that make
process plants safe in accordance with applicable
standards and regulations. Implementation of
standards like IEC 61508, IEC 61511, and ANSI/
ISA S84.01 form a major part of these activities.
Furthermore, Bert is a member of the IEC 61511
standard technical committee, which is the
process sector specific standard of IEC 61508.
Furthermore, Bert is a TÜV-Süd Certified
Functional Safety Expert and member of the
Technical Advisory Board for the process
industries of the CFSE organization. For almost 22 years he acted as Business
Development Manager worldwide responsible
for Honeywell’s Safety Consulting Services.
Almost on a daily base, he is involved in
helping end-users in the process industry
to implement safety lifecycle management
activities. In 2002 Bert obtained his Ph.D. at
the Eindhoven University of Technology with
regard to Safety Lifecycle Management. In
2003 Bert received his Six-Sigma certificate as
team leader in a GreenBelt for Growth project. Since beginning of 2011, Bert has become
chairman of the Dutch Society of Risk
Analyses and Reliability (NVRB).
In 2004 Bert became certified by TÜV
Rheinland as TÜV - Functional Safety Expert
and is currently member of their Functional
Safety Interest Group.
Since 2012, he is a representative of the
official national Dutch Reliability Network
Risk Management. In addition, Bert is
executive member of the Advisory Board
of the Technical University, Twente, the
Netherlands. Bert chaired plenary and several
break-out conference sessions of the ESREL
2013. Bert has written and presented over 80+
scientific papers, publications and conference
presentations.
