Dimensional suitability , Connectivity , Safety
Q9 : Are there additional issues and considerations that should be considered for this route ? My hope is that this section will go as far East as Rose Island Road . That would open up a safer way for Louisville residents to access the routes in Oldham County . If that is not possible , then for the Loop to go at least as far East as the end of River Road where it intersects Hwy 42 . If the Loop did connect to Rose Island Road that would make riding on Hwy 42 to and from Prospect unnecessary . Q10 : What do you feel is the most important opportunity or challenge for this section of the Louisville Loop route ? To connect Louisville , Prospect and Oldham County residents using non-motorized methods of travel in the safest ways possible , and in a way that encourages those residents to do so . Q11 : Please provide any additional information you would like to share with Louisville Metro Parks and the project planning team . My first choice is to have the Loop use the old Inter-Urban railroad / trolley route , and to have River Road widened . By doing both of those slower bicycle riders and walkers could share the Loop safely , and faster adult riders could use River Road more safely . On the Loop : Mixing faster adult riders with pedestrians / walkers with dogs / people with small children & strollers becomes problematic . Even pedestrians without companions , human or pets , change directions and change their line of travel unpredictably and with out signaling to passing bicycles . Those with companions are even more unpredictable . River Road is the main access route for most east end and all downtown Louisville bicycle riders to access Prospect and Oldham County . Adult bicycle riders on roads commonly travel at 18 mph , and riders that are stronger ride 25 mph and even higher in some cases . I have seen groups of riders travel at 28 mph for many miles . Further , by their nature walking / bike paths have many intersections with stop signs at road and drive-way intersections . Adult bicycle riders moving at these speeds will be discouraged from using the Loop because of the concerns noted above . If we want to accommodate all the non-motorized traffic safely and encourage that type of travel , then both a Loop route and a wider River Road will be needed .
