IS WORK/LIFE BALANCE
A DIRTY MYTH?
We’re always banging on about trying to achieve work/life
balance, but I recently stumbled across a very thought-provoking
perspective that I hadn’t actually considered before; the
statement I heard was along the lines of ‘if you really really want
to excel at something, then a work/life balance will be
impossible’.
Now I’ll admit, this actually made me sit up and listen because
it’s certainly a different take on what we’ve all been led to
believe – cripes, we even have a dedicated expert on the topic in
this very magazine! I mean think about it; someone who wants to
climb Mt Everest or complete a marathon without falling in a
heap will need to put in the hard yards to sufficiently train. And
that will require periods of imbalance in order to do it right. So
the statement holds true, in that regard. What do you think?
While I do agree that in instances where a big, hairy audacious
goal is involved, work/life balance may, at times, be unlikely; I
also believe that in order to achieve and retain optimum health,
we DO need some work/life balance in our life.
So what’s your take? I’d love to hear what you think.
