hanks to a growing body of medical
research, we’re aware that sitting
all day has disastrous effects on the body,
including weight gain, fatigue, decreased
blood flow, and increased risk of serious
disease.
T
InMovement is an innovative supplier of
health solutions for all types of
workplaces, and their mission is to bring
movement back into the work day, to
create a happier and healthier workforce.
Unfortunately, sitting is a big part of our
culture. It’s considered polite to give up
your seat on the bus or invite someone to
‘please take a seat’ in a waiting room.
When you go to the movies, take a plane
trip or dine at your favorite restaurant,
sitting is your only option.
At InMovement, they believe the first step
in conquering prolonged sitting is to
change habits at the workplace, where
employees typically sit for hours on end.
In June last year, international experts
commissioned by Public Health England
proposed formal guidance regarding the
ideal time for sitting versus standing,
while working.
According to their recommendation
published in the British Journal of Sports
Medicine, office workers should strive
initially for at least two hours of standing
and light activity during an eight-hour
work day. Eventually, employees should
work their way up to spending half of the
eight-hour workday on their feet.
They do not recommend standing for four
hours straight, but instead using sit-tostand desks, and light activity such as
walking, to break up prolonged periods of
sitting. According to an article from The
Washington Post, one of the report
authors James Buckley said the
recommendations
provide
‘initial
guidance, which we do expect to evolve
with time.’
Since sitting is such a common part of
the day for typical office workers, an
expert recommendation to combat
workplace inactivity is a big step towards
creating a healthier workplace.
