OH! Magazine - Australian Version June 2014 (Australian Version) | Page 3

IT’S OFFICIALLY WINTER. AND MY HUSBAND HAS GONE NUTS! My husband has gone a little bit ‘loco’. And I really admire him for it! A bit of background: if you live in Sydney you may have heard about a group called the Bondi Icebergs. This group of people are typically known for their questionable sanity, because they are commited to swimming in the ocean throughout winter. The club began in 1929 and is actually the only licensed Winter Swimming Club in the world today. Fast forward to 2014 and it’s almost a year since my family and I undertook a ‘tree change’ and relocated from the northern beaches of Sydney to a gorgeous tiny wee dot of a town called Metung, in the East Gippsland region of Victoria. We’ve fast learned that here it’s a lot hotter in summer and a lot colder in winter. So in the lead up to June, while I was lighting the open fire and wearing my outdoor puffy jacket and snow gloves inside the house, my husband announced that he was going to establish an informal ‘Metung Icebergs’ club and go for an outdoor swim every day throughout winter. When I asked ‘Dr Google’ about the health benefits of his intended lunacy, I was suitably impressed. The list included boosting immunity, creating a natural high, improving blood circulation, burning calories and even enhancing libido. Impressively, husband has been true to his word for a good month now, and so far he appears to be invigorated by the routine with no signs of quitting. And sure, the club still only boasts a membership of one, but you have to start somewhere, right? So, why not add a little ‘loco’ to your life? Set your own winter challenge, as it were. Think about something you’ve always wanted to try, but never quite pulled the trigger to do. The best gift you can give yourself is making ‘tomorrow’ today, so start living the ‘I will’ and let me know how it goes.
